Mill Road Improvements: what’s next?

In July 2022, Cambridgeshire County Council committed to invest in streetscape improvements for Mill Rd. It recognised that the thousands of people walk and wheel along this street every day deserved a better experience.

In March 2025, as part of its Greenways City Access programme. the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) redirected the last stage of the Fulbourn Greenway. It will now run along Mill Road, over the bridge and along Devonshire Rd to the rail station. It also committed to work with other local authorities to develop a vision for the whole of the street.

GCP remit is to complete the Greenway and enable access to the station. It cannot deliver a whole road solution for Mill Road, so the city and county councils need to pledge their support and dedicate skills and resources to this project. To urge them to do this groups with an interest in making Mill Rd better devised a petition to the County Council, urging them to act on their 2022 commitment.

October 2025: the petition: Local groups are petitioning Cambridgeshire County Council to:

  • Ensure that officers and councillors are committed to work on the Mill Road vision
  • Identify funding for the implementation of improvements beyond the scope of the GCP’s Greenway project
  • High priorities should be improving pavements, crossings and junctions, controlling pavement parking and reducing clutter
